Rug Size Calculator — What Size Rug for Living Room, Bedroom & Dining

The right rug size makes a room feel finished — the wrong one shrinks it. Pick your room and furniture below, and the calculator works out the ideal rug size, the nearest standard size to buy, the rug pad size, and shows a scaled room diagram. It works for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms. You pick the room type and the placement you like. You enter the room size and one furniture size. The calculator gives you the ideal rug size in inches. It also names the nearest standard size to buy in shops. Standard sizes include 5 by 8, 8 by 10, and 9 by 12 feet. A rug that is too small makes the room feel broken up. A rug that fits well ties the furniture together. Measure first, then check the diagram before you buy.

How to measure for the right rug size

  1. Measure your room wall to wall in feet — width and length.
  2. Measure the key piece of furniture in inches: sofa width for a living room, bed width for a bedroom, or table width and length for a dining room.
  3. Enter the numbers in the calculator above and read off the ideal size, the nearest standard size, and the rug pad size.
  4. Before you buy, tape the outline on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day — it is the fastest way to catch a size that feels off.

Rug placement guide

Living room

Two layouts work. With the front legs of the sofa on the rug, the rug anchors the seating area while the back legs stay on the floor — the classic, budget-friendly look. With all four legs on the rug, the seating area feels grander and more pulled together, but you will need a bigger (and pricier) rug.

Bedroom

Slide a large rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends about 18 inches beyond each side — your feet land on softness every morning. In a narrow bedroom, skip the big rug and run one runner down each side of the bed instead.

Dining room

The rug must extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides. That way chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out, and legs do not catch on the rug edge mid-dinner.

Rug tips

  • Leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls.
  • Choose a rug wider than your sofa, never narrower.
  • Rotate the rug every few months so it wears evenly.
  • Pick a low pile rug for dining rooms so chairs slide with ease.
  • In a bedroom, place a soft rug where your feet land first.
  • Vacuum both sides of the rug now and then to lift dirt.

Common rug mistakes

  • Buying a rug that is too small for the room.
  • Letting a dining rug sit only under the table, not the chairs.
  • Pushing all the furniture against the walls, off the rug.
  • Skipping the rug pad, so the rug slips and wears fast.
  • Picking a thick pile for a dining room, so chairs catch and drag.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular rug size for a living room?

An 8 by 10 foot rug is the go-to for most living rooms. It is large enough to hold the front legs of a standard three-seat sofa plus an armchair, which is why the calculator above recommends it for the default measurements.

Should a rug go under the bed?

Yes — a rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending about 18 inches past each side, makes the bedroom feel warmer and finished. If the room is too narrow for a full rug, use a runner on each side instead.

How far should a rug extend beyond a dining table?

At least 24 inches on every side. Measure the table, add 48 inches to both the width and the length, and you have your ideal rug size. Anything smaller and chair legs will slip off the rug when people sit down.

Do I need a rug pad, and what size?

A rug pad keeps the rug from slipping, adds cushioning, and protects the floor underneath. Buy a pad 2 inches smaller than the rug on each side — for example, a 94 by 118 inch pad under a 96 by 120 inch (8 by 10 foot) rug. The calculator above works this out for you automatically.

Can a rug be too big for a room?

Yes. A rug that runs wall to wall with no floor border looks like carpet. Leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor around the edges in most rooms. In a small room, 8 to 12 inches is enough.

What rug size suits a small living room?

A 5 by 8 foot rug is a good start for a small room. Keep the front legs of the sofa on the rug. If the sofa is under 72 inches wide, a 5 by 8 still works well.

Should all the furniture legs sit on the rug?

They can, if the rug is big enough. All legs on the rug suits large rooms and open plans. Front legs on is the classic choice and works in most rooms. Floating furniture with no legs on the rug looks unfinished.
